Ok, they just made a mix of questions from different interviews and didn’t really have a conversation with them.
Anyway here it is:

Cover:
Big Bill
Bill Kaulitz admits: “I’ve already planned my funeral.” Now he’s gonna conquer America.

Article: Don’t kill Bill.
Bill Kaulitz, the lead singer of the band Tokio Hotel, has gone through difficult months. Starting from his surgery (Bill admits: “I’ve imagined my funeral”), through the fear of losing fans (“I was hoping they won’t get mad at me), to America (“at the start no one knew us”). Now he’s healthy, thank God, and he’s gonna conquer the world again!

“The most frightening moment throughout this entire time was the night before the surgery” reveals Bill in an interview he did not long ago. “I was watching a horror film, I can’t even remember its name, and during the film a man had to undergo a surgery and had to be anesthetized. Problem was that even after they put him to sleep he was still aware of everything that was going on and felt everything, but couldn’t say anything to the doctors. After watching that movie I thought to myself that this could happen to me too during the surgery tomorrow, and I realized that I only had to go through the anesthesia stage successfully and not be aware of what’s happening around me. That was scary.”
A few weeks after that same surgery Bill went right back to the center of attention – he’s doing interviews, and his voice sounds exactly the same, without any trace of that dramatic surgery that was threatening the band’s existence.
The first show after Bill’s surgery was in New Jersey. “We played 3 songs and there were so many fans there”, Bill updates. After that they’ve managed to perform in Canada and go back to the USA again, where they’re about to continue their world tour.

Love and understanding
Bill Kaulitz was born 18 years ago. Even as a child he loved singing with his twin brother Tom. The two participated in TV shows and that’s how they rubbed against the music industry. During those years they’ve met Gustav and Georg, and together the four started playing under the name Devilish. After a German producer discovered them, the band changed their weird name to a catchier one, Tokio Hotel.
From the very beginning the band got very successful with their German album and later with an English one as well. Tokio Hotel started touring all over Europe and even came to Israel to give us an unforgettable show.
Bill, how is it like playing in a band with your brother?
“It feels totally normal. Tom and I have always hung out together and we’ve always had the same friends. When I started singing I realized I need a background player and I chose him.”
Tom: “He needed me.”

It looks like TH’s road to success was secured; only they’ve reached an unexpected difficulty. “I had problems with my voice and I realized that if I won’t undergo a surgery I won’t be able to sing anymore”, explains Bill. “when they told me I was gonna be doing nothing for 4 weeks at least, it was very harsh news for me, but I knew I had to go through it.” The surgery went good, but the rehabilitation progress wasn’t easy. Bill was forbidden of using his voice almost completely, he couldn’t listen to the band’s songs and spent most of the days watching TV and writing songs. “I was also worried about my fans”, he says.
How did you handle the fans’ reaction?
“Their reaction was great. Before I went through the surgery I was hoping no one would get mad at me because of canceling the shows, but the fans surprised me. That helped in knowing I wasn’t abandoned and that everyone is worried about me and didn’t leave me behind. I got a lot of presents, some were weird, and some were less weird. But to be honest I didn’t even get to see all of them because there were so many.”
How did it feel to be back on stage again?
“I was really hoping to get back on stage and see my audience again. I wanted to prove myself I could go on the stage with a microphone in my hand and sing successfully. I wanted to show I was able to get back and make my fans happy. I’m very sorry I disappointed all my fans when the shows got cancelled.”

English is a hard language
In an interview to last month’s German Vanity Fair, Bill said he was really afraid of the surgery and could even see his own funeral in his mind. But now you can only hope the tough moments are in the past. Now, after they’ve conquered Europe, they’re trying to take over the entire world.
In the beginning of last month the band had a promoting tour in the US for their English album “Scream”, where it ranked 39th place in record sales. It turns out the band has as much fans in the US and were thrilled to see them at the shows in NY: “it’s an amazing city which we all wanna return to”, say the four members of the band. In between shows, they were asked what was their goal – and the answer was not surprising. “One of our main goals is to have more fans”, tells Bill. “We arrive a city and at first no one recognizes us, but then after the show we have more fans. For example, we played in Canada and it was so much fun to see we have fans there. Our biggest dream ever since we started the band was to make it in the US because we grew up listening to great band like Green Day and Metallica.”
What is the thing that bugs you the most about having fame?
Bill: “I hate the paparazzi”
Tom: “when they disturb us during vacation”
Bill: “in Europe it’s really bad, the photographers are horrible. Luckily in America there are less photographers who bug us.”
Where do you get inspirations for your songs?
Bill: “many things inspire us. We get inspired by things that happened to us in the past few years and also by things that happened to our family and friends. We get letters from fans in which they tell us about things that happened to them and apply it in our songs.”

In order to make it in the US the band had to face a huge barrier – the language. With their heavy German accent it wasn’t easy for them to pass the playlist check, which includes songs by native English speakers, and therefore they worked on it and their English had improved marvelously. But one thing hasn’t changed – even when they write the songs in English, they first write them in German and then translate them. Old habits die hard, you know…
Does the language barrier bother you?
Bill: “not long ago we arrived the states for the first time and we had to face the English language. It was hard especially in interviews for TV shows but we’re trying our best to get better. It was really challenging to make the English album, because it was the first time I recorded so many songs in English and I’m a perfectionist. I wanted to sound like a native speaker. As you could hear on the album it isn’t really like that, but I hope you liked the result.”

Grounded
These days the band members spend almost all their time together, discovering things they never knew about each other.
Bill: “Georg has this really weird thing going on – he was twist his thumbs in a weird kind of way.”
Georg quickly shows what Bill means, and Bill is disgusted all over again.
With all the success, how do you manage to keep your feet on the ground?
Georg: “now that’s a question for Tom! Ego, how do you keep it under control?” he laughs.
Tom: “I spend most of my time with girls, they keep me grounded.”
Bill: “we’re watching over each other. Because we’ve known each other for more than 7 years now we know exactly what’s going on with the other person and make sure no one gets out of control.”
Bill, you have to tell us what’s the thing with the make-up… (TN: yes, that’s how they wrote it, pretty nasty if you ask me…)
“It started when I was 10. I went to a custom party dressed up as a vampire. I really looked like one and I liked it so I continued doing it. Everyone has their own style. For example, Georg used to be really ugly in the past, and he’s really ugly now…”
Georg: “shut up…”
No fighting boys. Say, as a band do you fight?
Bill: “yeah, definitely. But most of the time we understand each other, and when we don’t we’re too busy to fight. We’re constantly doing something, but yeah, there are times when we’re on tour and we fight. Luckily we make up fast”

Looking at these four youngsters it seems like they’re really good friends and their here to make it big. If they keep on working hard there’s no doubt that in the future they’re gonna conquer the moon and mars too…

10 things you might have not known about Bill Kaulitz:

2. He won’t go out with a fan just for a one night thing.
3. He wrote most of the songs in Tokio Hotel’s first album.
4. There are only 2 things in this world he’s allergic to: apples and bee bites.
5. He has tattoos and piercings in his tongue and eyebrow.
6. He dubbed the character of Arthur in the German version of the movie “Arthur and the Minimoys”
7. He loves watching movies of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt.
8. When he’s not performing or doing interviews he doesn’t wear make up at all.
9. His favorite food is schnitzel.
10. Bill says Heidi Klum is his favorite model. “She tops Claudia Schiffer.” In case you didn’t get it – they’re both German.
