Bill: "Adult is relative" - Welt Online

In a new interview with Welt Online, the twins seem very deep in thought as they talked about turning 20, their family and friends, dealing with the media, trying to live a bit more regular lives, among other things. If there’s an interview you’re going to read, this should be the one. It really shows the extent of Bill & Tom’s intelligence.

"Bill Kaulitz never leaves the house before he is ready,” says the woman from the record company. Appointment times are therefore calculated, so that his mask is always in place. And when the petite young man stands before you, you get a slight idea of how much time his appearance takes. Among the perfectly set, dyed black hair, dreadlocks peek out, the eyelids to graced with a composition of black and white, matching the painted nails. The hands in leather gloves have difficulty separating the mass of chains that are attached to his black shirt. His twin Tom is sitting next to him on a couch in a hotel room with pink walls. He fancies himself as a street rocker with a leather jacket and braided hair. No less expensive, but not so conspicuous. Two ordinary guys framed in a pop-star reality.

Welt am Sonntag: Bill, Tom, you both have a birthday on the 1st of September, what do you want?
Bill Kaulitz: I wish to see my family and friends, and to drink coffee. I love coffee, I drink gallons of it. And I’d like a round of coffee with cream pies. And it would great if all were over 60. So we can have a really good gossip session.
Tom Kaulitz: With older people talking it results in conversations that are completely off the beaten track. They have very different thoughts. It would be good for both of us to each have a Sunday tea-party.

Do you have material desires?
Bill: No.

A new car perhaps?
Tom: I don’t think there are many people that would give me something that extravagant. But of course, I would be happy with a new car.

You are turning 20. Are you an adult?
Bill: I think I’ll never grow up. But growing up is also relative, I have already thought of 13 that I can do anything, and I felt old enough to go to clubs and drink alcohol. I always felt older than I am.

You have finished your secondary school certificate by distance learning and have been awarded for particularly good performance.
Bill: This is almost embarrassing, right?

A little bit.
Bill: Tom and I hated school. That was the worst time in our lives. I feel sorry for anyone that has to go to school.

What was so bad?
Tom: Most of the people were scandalized because of our appearance. Worst of all, I find that the personality of each individual is totally suppressed in the institution of schooling.
Bill: Tom and I were in two different classes for disciplinary reasons in the 7th grade. We were real problem children, and were almost expelled from school. But not because of drugs or fights. But because we used to discuss everything, which the teachers hated. And then you realize that learning to become a teacher is not selective enough. Many slip into study because they see no other way. But to be a teacher, you have to really want to learn and to have passion to teach.

They have so many of your fans that see you as a role model. Are there any values that you want to convey?
Tom: We are actually not role models.

But you are in a certain way. Are you aware?
Tom: No, not often. One must also be free to make your own decisions. We have limited time, anyway. In any case, I want to pay attention now so that I do not use swear words in interviews.

You have however committed, for example, to an anti-AIDS campaign.
Tom: Of course, sometimes we try to stand up for things we find important. But in the end: I don’t want to be a role model or idol. I hate the idea of it and I never will be a role-model.

Do you vote?
Tom: Um, yes. Let’s see.
Bill: At least the first time we did.

How high is the percentage of normalcy in your life?
Bill: One percent.

Is it the same as with international stars, that you cannot even go out shopping?
Tom: Yes, absolutely. When we started making music, we were at an age where our parents bought everything for us and now we are in an age where we need to do that ourselves, and we cannot.
Bill: It sounds kind of cool to have a personal assistant, who has to worry about things like that. But sometimes I would like to be able to choose my own yogurt.
Tom: [I]In the U.S., there are also supermarkets, which are open 24 hours a day. So you can also visit there a four in the morning, when nobody else is there. There we once walked into a toy department, and brought us everything. Guns with arrows and remote-controlled cars.
Bill: And then we had rocketed cars. Totally ridiculous.

And how do you buy your clothes?
Bill: This is usually done on the Internet or from the catalogue. So boring. But sometimes you have to jump over the shadow, say f*** it, stop standing out there, photographers and fans outside the door. Sometimes you have to go out just to live.

What’s on catering to your wish list?
Bill: Actually, there is a new one every year. And I must admit that it is pretty long. But we are so seldom at home, and so you try to make wherever you are beautiful. The most important thing to get right is coffee and blankets in the hotels. These rugs are the worst. Because it feels like being at camp. That is what is most important to me, a true ceiling and a real pillow.

Have you actually still quite normal friendships from the past?
Bill: Not really. In the Tokio Hotel time we haven’t added any new friends because you can’t really get to know them. Anyone who touches us, generally already has an opinion about us.

You use extra caution when it comes to people because you have often been deceived?
Tom: Yes, most of them with hidden agendas. We have had many experiences at the beginning of our career. At 15 we were at an after-show party, and have of course been photographed with alcohol. Back then it was like this: You drank a sip of alcohol, and then the magazine editors called the next day, wanting a scoop.

But you probably got coaching in how to deal with such situations.
Tom: No, we never have. And I do not need someone who tells me how I should respond to these questions.
Bill: You have to learn it yourself. By living and accepting that there are times when there are wrong things printed in the newspaper.

Do you have psychological support for such times?
Tom: The psychological care comes from our family and friends. I would imagine maybe getting professional help, but we have no time.
Bill: When people do that, I can understand it. The problem is, I believe that it doesn’t always help.
Tom: I also always think I’m smarter than the psychologist himself
Bill: Exactly. I would be like; All of what I’m telling you I’m telling you deliberately, because it’s my problem. And then the psychologist would say: Yes, you need time to think about it. And then I think to myself: Yeah great, I also knew before.

He's right though. 60+ year olds have different things to say and talk about. They definitely won't care that he's "Bill Kaulitz," they'll just want to shove food down his throat 'cause he's too skinny. lol.

Here's the actual interview!

Welt.de: “Being an adult is relative”

Children, time flies by: The Teen Stars from Tokio Hotel are almost twenty. Bill and Tom Kaulitz talk of crashes, with 15, their luck, to go shopping theirselves, and why they prefer to talk to Grandma’s.

“Bill Kaulitz never leaves the house unvarnished,” says the woman from the record company. The time in the mask must therefore always be calculated at appointments. And when the petite young man stands in front of you, you get a slight idea of how much time he needs for his appearance.

Among the perfectly coiffed black and blond dreadlocks, a composition of a black and white line graces his eyelids, and his suitably painted nails. The hands in leather gloves have difficulty to arrange the mass of chains that are attached to his black shirt.

His twin Tom is sitting next to him, on a couch in a hotel room with pink painted walls. He fancies himself as a street rocker with a leather jacket and braided hair. Not less expensive, but not as striking. Two ordinary guys in pop-star attire.

WamS: Bill, Tom, both your birthdays are on September 1st, what do you desire?

WamS: But you probably get coached in how to deal with such situations.

Tom: No, we never did. And I do not even want someone who tells me how I should respond to the questions.

Bill: You have to learn this by yourself, by bolting into such a situation and then living with the fact that sometimes also bad things are written about you in the newspapers.

WamS: Do you get psychological support for such cases?

Tom: Our family and friends are our psychological support. I could imagine getting professional help, but there’s the problem with the time again.

Bill: I can understand, when people do that. The problem is, I don’t believe in it.

Tom: I also always think I’m smarter than the psychologist himself.

Bill: Exactly. Everything I tell you, I tell you deliberately, because it’s my problem. And then the psychologist would say: Yes, you need to take some time to think about it. And then I think to myself: Great, I also knew this before.

Narcissists always think they're smarter than psychologists, which is why they say there is no cure for narcissism. Therapy would do either of them no good.

Anyway, I really liked this interview. I think this is one of the most revealing interviews they've done in quite some time and I can definitely appreciate that.

Edit: I meant to comment on the old people thing, but I forgot after I started reading the full interview. I think that's extremely unusual for twenty-year-olds to want to have a party where all the attendees are above the age of 60. It is so rare for anybody to see the elderly as their equals, and that is very commendable. I don't know if I'd be able to do that, just because being around the elderly sometimes makes me cry. Lol, don't ask.

I believe the twins enjoy the company of those who are much older than them because they do not have to be someone they are not. They can be themselves and be appreciated. Plus, older ppl have life experience and most of the time, can see past the bluff and not fall for it.

Bill/Tom had to adjust to adult responsibilites at a very young age. So, they didn't have a regular childhood like other 13-15yr olds. So, in a sense, they may want to keep holding on to that innoncence. But, they also realize that the experiences they've gone through has matured them beyond their years.

So, yes, they don't want to grow up, they want to have mindless fun, be silly/goof around. But, they realize that they have responsibilities to take care of, they have to be adults, make decisions everyday and maintain their careers.

my mom works in a nursing home! and yeah it is sad. but you know... they've lived their long lives and had many good times and it's just slowly dwindling down like what happens to everyone eventually. I don't get myself worked up over it cuz it's just what naturally happens and we can't really do much about people's lives fading away. *shrugs*

I kinda get freaked out in a way when I'm there because like... there's all these like extremely fragile people around and it's like if you poke them their arms would break or something and they could die at any instant. it like... overwhelms me kinda. but most of them are nice though.

OMG YES! That's always why old people make me cry! It's so retarded! We were watching some old home movies shot by my grandfather when he and my grandmother were young parents, and I just bawled my eyes out. It just seemed so unfair that they are so trapped in these aging bodies and minds when they were no different than I have ever been. I hate watching them forget things and turn into different people. It breaks my heart. There's nothing more painful than watching a grandparent slowly forget who you are. It's just not fair. My great-grandmother lives in a nursing home, and I never visit her because she doesn't remember me and I can't handle being around all these people who are barely fragments of what they used to be. It just... seems so wrong that they should be allowed to forget the people they love and care about most. :(

*hugs Lynelle*

I've never managed to follow the phrase "live for today" or "live for the moment". I dunno, I've always kinda been in tomorrow before today even began, if you get my drift. Like, I can already start worrying myself over something twenty years on, not that I know what it would be, but I can imagine it, judging by the life I want in my head. I can't just press pause on my brain and say "right, one day at a time, one second at a time"... I'm always on fast-forward.

I totally understand.. I live the same way.. I kinda hate it but I can't help it.. it's the way i've been brought up.. you do stuff now so later on you'll have a better life.. the problem is that "later on" never comes.. at least not now.. I wish I could just stop time for a moment.. but that feeling won't go away at least till I get out of school.. cuz there it's always like "if you prepare well and study enough you'll have a bright future" and that's just the way we roll everyday..SUCKS! lol

And after you're out of school it's work hard and save for your retirement, and then you worry about your long term care, etc. It never ends. Hope I didn't depress you.

Here, let's help celebrate Tom and Bill's birthday and share some coffee and cakes.

I'm going to guess something with pistachio. They're often green, no idea why.

Bump. This is a very nice interview.

It's already September 1 somewhere in the world.

That sounds more like something a high school guidance counselor would say than what a competent therapist would say, Bill. But either way, I'm not a fan of cognitive therapy. Dialectical behaviorism (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dialectical_behavior_therapy) FTW!

I wish them happy bday only when it's time in Germany, I guess...

But maybe they have this coffee party this time? It can happen.

Oh, I would LOVE to have some discussion over this! maybe I just don't, because i'm too tired right now to get passionate, but anyway.

I veryu strongly recommend them not to underestimate psychologists... I think they (and actually everyone) could use som,e sometimes.

I'm not the best person to say, because I don't believe in therapyt's or other psychological help's blind awesomeness in every situation, but with a right and a good professional help & right attitude (the most important) it does miracles. In much different way than family & friends, though, but it's not trying to replace those at all.

I believe cognitive therapy works only with part of the people, mostly very practical ones. I don't think it will do much on very analytical people.

But I'm not a "shrink" myself, so I don't go into that any deeper.

Yes, absolutely. Though I have a friend who was clearly smarter and more awesome than his therapist. Sometimes you have to shop around before you find the right match.

Agreed.

I think cognitive therapy is best for people who are struggling to figure out why they're doing the things they're doing or feeling what they're feeling. For people who are more self-aware, it's fairly useless. Even your standard Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy is too cognitively-oriented for my tastes.

I think what is good about therapy is when you talk to someone about your problems and they are professional, they often spot the root of the issue when you haven't. Sometimes even your common old rants can reveal alot about what the heart of the problem is. I think saying things like "you are just jealous" is not valid, because I think jealousy on its own isn't a solid thing, it's got underlying reasons and causes for showing. At the end of it, it's often such a simple thing which you may never have thought of. A simple incident, something someone said, snowballs into what can be horrible insecurities.

For instance, I thought about it, doing my own form of therapy, and I discovered that the reason I have such crappy insecurities and such a self loathing is because I used to hear my mum make snide comments about my sister when she looked at herself in the mirror and when I'd spend time trying to make myself pretty or put any effort. She'd say things like "I love me, who do you love?" or "Tarting up for the boys" and I think eventually she made me feel that it's wrong to feel pretty or feel anything worthy about yourself. It's wrong to think that you aren't that bad after all. And if I hadn't figured that out, I'd never have thought of those moments, but I still don't know how to deal with it.

/very pointless.

It's not pointless. Understanding the things you do and feel is the first step to not reacting automatically. Just what the doctor Bill recommends!

Yep! I just have the problem that I know what my problems are but I just sweep them under the rug and hope they go away; I'm not very good at dealing with things, I tend to run away from them. Hope they don't catch up but they have a knack of getting ahead of me. I'm a lazy, unmotivated, undisciplined person. A disgrace to the army, in any case. I have no inner strength yet I am excellent at advising my friends and being insightful on them. Kinda ironic.
