The Germans of Tokio Hotel are back with the album Humanoid • This fourth opus is co-written with RedOne and Ryan Tedder of OneRepublic • Meeting with the androgynous singer Bill Kaulitz.
This is your second album also released in English ...
What is different this time is that we release it in both languages simultaneously, and we will continue to do so in the future.
You prefer singing in English or in German?
English and German are part of us but I could not say whether I prefer one or the other. In fact, when we were touring the United States the last time we sung in German too. We sung more in English, yes, but the fans also want our songs in German. Moreover, they sing with us!
The Scorpions were huge in the U.S. ...
(Laughter.) It's a legend, that group, with titles that have become legendary. It is not our kind of music! For Rammstein same thing. They are great on stage, but well, it's not our cup of tea.
You worked with a lot of people. Has this contributed to a more mature sound?
In fact, for us it was a development, but this is not something we did on purpose. It didn't think: "Now we will create a new sound." We did not write for a long time, so we wanted to see what kind of music each of us wanted to do. And eventually that was the result. We also thought we'd try to do something other than guitar, bass and drums. That's how it happens but it's not something that was done knowingly.
There are a lot of synthetizers. Some sounds remind us of the 80s ...
True. However, each of us listens to a different music, but on the other hand, during the whole phase of production of the album, we do not listen to other music. We are so focused on ourselves and what we want to make that there are hardly any influence. We just tried to see how we could expand the sound of Tokio Hotel. And even during production, we tried lots of things to see what we wanted to do. We did what we felt inside of us and that's the result.
What do you think about when you listen to the songs from your starting?
My voice has obviously changed because it became deeper, but on the other hand, it is true that we are older but not necessarily more mature!(the text says more like adults)
Oh yeah?you lead a life of rock'n'roll debauchery?
I don't get what you mean by that! (Laughter.) When we're on tour, there is no alcohol. Anyway, we need our nights. But if we go out, we really party with all parts of what is rock'n'roll!
In the song "World Behind My Wall," you sing: "One day I'll be ready to go see the world behind my wall." It is quite intriguing ...
In fact, we wrote the songs together with our producers, of course, but that title is exremely personal. It's not about being confined in the sense of a prison, but being surrounded by walls all the time. This is what happens to us since five years.
Is it part of the drawbacks to your success, being unable go out without being harassed by the fans?
Yes, absolutely. We would love to get out a bit, see the outside world. But we also like success. Before, when we went out in other countries, we walked around without bodyguards, walked normally on the street. Now this is not possible anymore. But we want people to know and listen to our music, so success becomes like a drug.
What would you do if you were not musicians?
We would surely be unemployed musicians and we would go to nightclubs and from a bar to another to play a little. And on the side, we would do some porn movies to earn more money!
Why? Had Somebody already proposed roles to you?
No.Not directly. Nobody's going to propose that to me because it is not very realistic that I participate in the film.
There was not a project for a film of Tokio Hotel? But I think it was not porn!
(Laughter.) Evidently, it has already been proposed, not to make a porn movie but as a group. Personally, I have great respect for actors, but one should know to not overdo things. Musicians shouldn't be actors and actors shouldn't be musicians. Better not mix everything. But the idea is not excluded if one day we are offered the right role.
Do your comrades feel a little neglected at times compared to all the attention you get?
It was never an issue between us. But it is a recurring theme at this time because the thing is that I'm all alone on the cover of the new album. It will disrupt the world for sure. But it has never been an issue for us because each group has a singer and ours happens to be me.
