View Full Version : The Room Behind the Windows

Bill couldn't remember anything before that day. It was almost as though he had suddenly blinked into being in the room behind the windows, fully formed, fully grown, but with no memories to call his own. He never found it strange, though. This is how it always was. This is how it always would be. After all, if that wasn't the case, he would have to remember something else, right?

From the room behind the windows, Bill had watched the new family move in. A father, a mother, and a son, laughing together as they carried box after box into the rooms just beyond his reach. He'd only had two windows then, one looking out over a pale blue bathroom, of all things, and another taller window peering into a large room they stuffed with couches and tables, but he followed the little trio with interest as they walked and talked. Bill fell asleep that night curled up close to the large window, waiting for them to walk back into view.

The following morning, Bill awoke to find three more windows dotting the room he called his home. There was a round one that spied out across the entryway, a large square one that somehow looked out over the couch filled room from an angle it shouldn't have been able to, and the one that would become his favourite, a tall skinny window, like himself, that gazed upon a box strewn room with a bed flopped at an awkward angle through the clutter. Pressing his hands against the glass, Bill took in his new view, feeling slightly guilty for spying on the boy in the bed.

The boy was curled into a small ball, balled deep in his blankets, facing away from the window. His hair was long, spilling over his pillow in thick, uncomfortable looking ropes that encompassed every shade from pale blonde to brown as they crept closer to his head. Reaching up, Bill pulled a lock of his own hair in front of his face, finding himself almost disappointed to realize that it was black instead of a similarly variegated shade. Frowning to himself, he strained to look around the room, to explore it with his eyes as best he could. He was so intent on his task that he never even heard the door open.

"Tom, honey, time to get up. You don't want to be late for your first day of school, do you?" the mother asked, stepping barely into Bill's view as he leapt back from his window, sure he was going to be caught.

Tom just grumbled and pulled a blanket over his head.

"Come on, kiddo, you don't want to make a bad impression right off the bat," she said, walking over to the bed and winding the blanket off the boy, Tom.

"Fine, fine, I'm up," Tom complained, finally sitting up and rubbing the sleep out of his eyes.

"There's my good boy," his mother said, dropping the blanket and giving his foot a squeeze. "I want you downstairs in ten minutes. You need to get some kind of breakfast in you before you go."

"Yeah, alright," he replied, nodding as she made her way out of the scene. Yawning, Tom stood with a stretch, suntanned skin pulling taut against thin ribs as Bill crept closer to the window again. "I don't know how she expects me to find anything in this mess, though," Tom said to himself, digging through a series of boxes until he struck upon one holding clothing. Tossing an outfit on the bed, he quickly stripped fully out of his sleeping clothes, seemingly entirely oblivious to Bill's presence.

Behind the window Bill covered his eyes in shock at Tom's boldness, turning and leaning against the wall as he listened to the other boy get dressed. After what felt like ample enough time, Bill chanced another look out his window, and came face to face with Tom. "Oh! Um, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to spy. I'm Bill, and I think you're Tom?" he ventured shyly, twining his fingers into each other behind his back while Tom swept his hair back into a short ponytail in silence.

That was when Bill realized that, while he could see and hear them, they couldn't see or hear him.

Bill didn't know how much time passed while he watched the family from his room behind the windows, days meant nothing to him. He and Tom both grew taller together, 'like a weed' Tom's mother often said, a phrase that never failed to make Bill smile. Their hair grew longer and Bill had to grin when Tom's father would tease Tom about cutting it. Every now and then Bill would awaken to find his windows moved around, new ones giving him new sights to see, old ones vanishing and cutting off familiar, well loved views.

Over the months and years that Bill spent watching the family past his windows, he grew to love them as his own. They were his family, the only family he knew. He shared their joys, pains, triumphs, and failures through the glass that kept them securely apart. His heart broke for them when their mother lost her job and they had to struggle along for what felt like an eternity. He cheered them on when things started looking up again.

But, through it all, Bill was lonely. He loved to watch his family beyond the windows, but he knew he would never be one of them. Their mother would never hug him. Their father would never pick at him about his long hair. Worst of all, he would never get to know Tom.

He couldn't remember when it happened. Just like he himself, it was something that seemed to have always existed somewhere. From the day the family moved into the house, Tom had been his favourite. Within days of finding the tall, thin window that looked out over Tom as he slept, Bill had begun sleeping near it in a vain attempt to be closer to the other boy. He needed to be close to Tom, he didn't know why, but the feeling inside him told him he did.

That's when the new person came.

Bill was sitting, watching the empty house, humming to himself and wondering how long it was going to be abandoned today when he heard the muffled, distant sound of the front door closing. Jumping to his feet, Bill padded across his room to the window that looked out across the entryway, grinning when he saw Tom, his Tom, and pressing himself as close to the glass as he could get.

"Don't worry, my folks aren't due back for hours," Tom said, shedding his backpack and jacket onto the entryway floor. "The house is going to be completely empty all day."

"Sounds like fun," the new person said, startling Bill.

Looking as hard as he could, Bill tried to see this new voice, finding her hidden just outside of his line of sight.

"That's what I was thinking," Tom said, giving the mystery a suggestive eyebrow raise. "Come on." Reaching out, Tom took ahold of the girl's hand, leading them both out of Bill's view.

Scrambling, Bill bounded from window to window, trying to spot the pair as they made their way through the house, finally stopping just before his tall, thin window. Bill stood hesitantly for a moment, eyebrows furrowed as he stared at the edge of the frame of his favourite window, suddenly unsure he wanted to look out. Taking a breath, he chastised himself for being silly and took the last steps to look out on Tom's room.

Only to find it completely empty.

"Where are you?" Bill fretted, pressing his forehead to the glass. "You can't have vanished."

"This is it," Tom said suddenly, flinging open his bedroom door so the other person could step inside. "Nothing too special, really."

"Special enough," the slight blonde said, running her fingertips over the desk Bill had watched Tom and his father build. "After all, it is yours." The blonde paused to smile over her shoulder at Tom before looking at Bill's window and smoothing a stray lock of hair. Bill glared at her, unseen.

"So," Tom said, sitting on the edge of his bed.

"So," the blonde responded, swiveling away from Bill's scorn and walking to Tom. With another smile she gave Tom a small push, knocking Tom onto his back and crawling up into his lap.

In the room behind the windows, Bill's eyes went wide as saucers as the girl pulled Tom, his Tom, into a kiss. "No!" Bill yelled at the glass, his voice reverberating around his little room. "No no no! Get off of him! You can't have him! He belongs to me!"

On the other side of the glass, Tom slipped his hand under the back of the girl's shirt, running his fingers along the blonde's knobby spine.

"No!!" Bill yelled again, beating his fists against the glass separating him from the scene beyond. "Tom, no! You can't do this, you can't do this to me!" he wailed. "Please, Tom, you can't..." Trailing off miserably, Bill gave the glass one final hard punch.

"What the **** was that?" the blonde asked, snapping up off Tom's face. "Did you hear that? Do you think your folks are home early?"

Tom ran his hands over the girl's hair, calming her nerves. "It's just an old, creaky house. It's probably settling or something."

Behind the glass, Bill merely blinked. They had heard him. "You can't have him," Bill repeated, gritting his teeth and hitting the glass as hard as he could, cheering through the pain as the blonde startled again.

"You can't tell me you didn't hear that," the girl said, looking around the room with wide eyes.

"Alright, that I heard," Tom replied, rolling the blonde off of him and sitting up. "Maybe a branch fell on the roof or something. We should probably go look and make sure there isn't a giant hole in the roof." With a sigh, Tom stood, glancing towards Bill's window with a furrow.

The blonde followed him up without prompting. "Yeah, we should definitely go outside. This place is giving me the creeps," she said, giving the room one last look before scurrying out the door.

Smiling as wide as he'd ever smiled before, Bill hurried to the entryway window, watching with relish as the blonde left, then sitting down to wait for Tom to return, his pained hand limp in his lap. Tom didn't make him wait long.

------

Slamming the door behind him, Tom ran back up the steps to his room, barely giving Bill time enough to hurry across his own small room to meet him. "Alright, let's see what's behind this thing," Tom said, reaching out for Bill's window. Bill had to close his eyes as the view altered dramatically on him, swinging around Tom and coming to rest against the other wall. Confused, Tom ran his hands over the smooth wall behind his mirror, knocking on it here and there to listen for hollow spots. "Huh, weird."

Tom gave the wall another thorough once over before replacing Bill's window in it's former spot. He was almost to the door again when Bill banged hopefully against the glass again. Startled, Tom swiveled, looking at the wall he had just checked. "What the **** is that?" he asked aloud.

"It's me," Bill replied. "Just hear me, Tom. You have to hear me." Once more he banged against the glass.

Furrowing, Tom came up to Bill's window, his mirror, looking at it suspiciously. Tentatively he touched its surface with his fingertips, Bill pressing his hand against them through the glass. "Is...something there?" Tom asked.

"I'm here," Bill whispered, wishing he could feel the warmth on the other side of the glass. Again he banged against the glass.

Tom yanked his hand away from the glass, looking at his reflection with wide dark eyes. They stood for a few moments, staring at each other without knowing, before Tom carefully reached forward again, knocking tentatively once on the glass, stepping back again quickly. Bill grinned blissfully, banging on the glass in reply.

"This...isn't real," Tom said, his eyebrows knitting together thoughtfully. "Alright, whatever you are, this is how we're going to do this," he called into the room, more loudly than he needed to. "I'm going to ask you some questions. Knock once for yes, and twice for no. Do you understand?"

Bill smiled again, remembering watching the movie Tom had gotten this idea from through the window in the living room. Raising his hand, he knocked once on the window.

Tom shuddered. "Okay.... Are you a ghost?" he asked, keeping his eyes fixed on the window, much to Bill's contentment.

Bill paused to think for a moment. He had never stopped to think about what he actually was, but he didn't think he was a ghost. He knocked twice.

"Then what..? Never mind. Why did you scare Amanda off? Wait, that's not a yes or no, um.... Did you scare my friend off on purpose?" Tom asked, raising an eyebrow.

Bill knocked once, hard and emphatic.

Tom jumped as the bang echoed through his room, stepping farther away from the mirror. "Are you...evil?"

"Of course not!' Bill exclaimed, offended, frowning at Tom for a minute before remembering that he was supposed to be knocking. Quickly he knocked twice.

Tom, however, took ample notice of the time gap between question and answer, skittering even father away from the mirror. "Uh huh, alright, sure," he replied. "I'm going to...go now. Don't do anything weird, okay?"

Bill pouted softly, knocking once on the window.

"Cool. Um, bye, I guess." With an awkward wave, Tom ducked out of his room, half convinced he never wanted to go back into it again.

Bill, however, was happier than he had ever been in his whole life. At least that he could remember. Tom had heard him! Tom had talked to him, with him. Happily Bill trailed Tom to the living room window, sitting and watching him idly as he daydreamed about all the great conversations they were going to have now.

He didn't remember falling asleep, lounged against the glass, but emphatic voices woke him some time later. Tom's mother had come home, and the two were now engaged in a heated discussion in the middle of the room. Furrowing, Bill leaned against the glass, listening as they walked circles around each other.

"Oh Tom, honey, you can't honestly believe this," Tom's mother said, pinching her nose between her thumb and forefinger. "This is because I let you stay up and watch that horror movie marathon, isn't it?"

Tom rolled his eyes. "I'm serious, mom! There is something in my mirror. I was asking it questions and it was answering me. House creaking doesn't answer questions!"

"Well, we're not going to move. Your father and I have good jobs here, and we were lucky to get this place for what we did," Tom's mom went on.

"Maybe you got this place so cheap because it's haunted, ever think about that?" Tom shot back.

"It's not haunted, Tom!" she retorted, exasperated with the conversation. "How about this. We'll just take the mirror out of your room, alright? We can put it in the hall or down in the basement."

Bill sat up straight, shaking his head at that idea. Tom wouldn't just get rid of him like that.

"Yeah, alright. Can I go move it now? I don't want it in my room tonight."

"Okay, kiddo. Just be careful, I don't want you dropping it and cutting yourself over this whole thing," his mom said softly, petting her boy's hair.

"Don't worry, I'll be careful. Thanks, mom," Tom replied, shying out from under her hands and darting upstairs.

Bill fled after him, sliding to a stop in front of his favourite window before Tom got there. "Tom, no! I didn't mean to scare you, I didn't. I'll be good, I'll be quiet. Just let me stay here, please," he pleaded the moment the other boy came into the room. "I won't even scare your annoying little friend anymore. Don't take my window away!"

Tom, as always, couldn't hear him pleading behind the mirror, and blithely went about pulling it off the wall for the second time that day. Catching his reflection in the glass, Tom shifted his eyes away. "Um, listen. This isn't about you...entirely. I just...I don't want a haunted old mirror in my room is all. Anyway, you'll like the basement. It's kinda creepy, too." Giving himself, and thus Bill, as reassuring a look as he could, Tom spun the mirror away from him and started out of his room.

Bill watched miserably as they trekked down the first flight of steps, not even delighting in getting to see all new parts of the house like he should have. A short trip through the kitchen followed, Bill viewing the room at an odd angle as his window was propped against the wall so Tom could open the door to the basement. One more flight of steps followed before Bill was spun around again and leaned carefully against yet another wall, a gloomy dank room, its ceiling filled with spider webs, appearing behind Tom, who quickly turned to make his way back up into the warmly lit house.

Raising his hand, Bill knocked twice on the glass. No.

That night, for the first time that he could remember, Bill cried.

Last part. I hope everyone enjoys. :)

-----

Bill didn't know how much time passed while he sat beside his formerly favourite window, knees pulled to his chest as he stared out into the darkness. Every once and again a light would flick on and the spiders weaving their way across his scene would scatter as Tom's father would wander through, looking for this thing or that. Bill didn't care. He didn't want to care.

So he didn't know how long the new window had been hanging in his room before he noticed it.

Bill sat, eyeballing the edge of the frame of the new window. It wasn't large, smaller than the one he was currently sitting by, but it wasn't all that small either. Fidgeting, he tried to convince himself that it wasn't important. It was just another boring view of another boring room.

He was halfway to the new window before he realized that he hadn't managed to convince himself not to bother. He was completely in front of the new window when his heart fluttered happily.

Tom lay curled on the bed, one foot hanging off the edge, snoring softly behind a mass of hair.

"Hey, you," Bill said softly, touching the surface of the window gently. "I missed you."

Tom mumbled something unintelligible and cooed, smiling in his sleep for a minute before rolling over and starting to snore again.

Bill smiled again, curling up against the window and letting the familiar sound of Tom's snoring lull him to sleep.

***

Bill awoke to the sound of muffled speech, and he could hear the smile in Tom's voice before he even looked out at him. Sitting up, he stretched and yawned before taking up watch again.

Tom was still lounged out on his bed, fully dressed for the day save for his shoes, a small phone clutched in one hand, and a grin splashed across his face. "No, don't worry, it'll be great, trust me. I was planning on making dinner and everything," he paused and laughed. "It won't be that bad, promise. It just won't be fancy or anything." Again he paused, listening to the voice on the other end of the line. "That's long gone. I put it in the basement months ago. Nothing gets to scare you off this time, Amanda. Honest."

On hearing the unpleasantly familiar name, Bill glowered, annoyance rising more and more as the conversation proceeded. He waited, letting Tom finish his precious phone call, then banged on the glass hard, briefly relishing the wide eyed stare Tom gave him.

"Oh there is no freaking way!" Tom exclaimed, springing off the bed and staring back through the mirror. "Why can't you just go away?!"

Bill slammed his fist into the glass again, watching Tom jump before casting around his room for something, anything, heavy and hard. "Why can't you just accept that I'm here and deal with it!?" he yelled back, finding a heavy glass orb tucked away in on of the corners and heaving it at the window separating them.

Tom clasped a terrified hand over his mouth as the mirror cracked in front of him. "Why are you doing this?"

Bill's eyes widened at the crack. He'd never thought of just breaking one of the windows to get out. It was just too easy. "Because I need you," he replied gleefully, swinging the orb at his side of the window again, the crack growing larger, hairline cracks radiating out around the edges.

As each crack appeared in the silvered glass, Tom stepped farther and farther away, half afraid to pass the mirror to escape out the door.

Finally the glass gave way, both sides falling to the ground in a tinkling heap. Tom fled past the shards now decorating his carpet, and Bill looked miserably at the bare wall edged in sharp shards. "But why?" he asked aloud, running his fingertips over the hard surface. He didn't even notice as the shards of glass at his feet melted together, sucking into the orb. "It isn't fair! Why do I have to suffer like this!" he screamed into the ether, picking up the sphere and bashing it into another window, the glass splintering easier than the last and tinkling to the floor. "Why can't I go out there, too? Why don't I get to live?"

Window after window fell under his rage, shards of glass continuing to melt harmlessly together into small puddles, until there were none left to vent on. Dropping his weapon, Bill screamed, howling his frustrations to nothing. "Why can't I be on the other side? Why am I trapped here, alone and unwanted? What did I do that was so wrong that I need to be punished like this?" he asked, wishing there was someone to listen to him. "I'd rather be dead than have to live here any longer!"

Around him, the room blurred, and Bill's eyes flung wide. Bit by bit he watched as his room disappeared, empty window panes blinking out of existence one by one, the corners of the walls fuzzing together into one flat, endless plain of white. Bill didn't even have a chance to think to retract his statement before his entire world was replaced by whiteness.

Whiteness and cold.

Bill shivered, wrapping his arms around his slim body in attempt to block out the cold that was whipping against him in his t-shirt. Everywhere he looked there was white; cold, damp white freezing his bare feet to the ground. "I didn't mean it," he whispered, stomping his feet in place to keep them from going numb. "I'll go back, please, I didn't mean it." Shivering again, he caught a hint of light from the corner of his eye, and turned towards it. Even that little flicker of light was better than freezing in the whiteness.

Climbing up on the porch of the modestly sized house, Bill looked back at the snow falling thickly behind him, blowing and swirling across the landscape, blotting out almost everything in its profusion. He shivered once more before raising his hand and knocking on the door.

"Bill!" the woman who answered the door exclaimed. "What on earth are you doing out in this weather dressed like that?" she asked, shooing him quickly inside. "I thought I raised you better than that."

"Sorry, mom," he mumbled, sucking in the warmth of home. "I wasn't expecting it to snow so much."

"That's no excuse!" she exclaimed again, quickly melting at her son's abashed expression. "Oh, well I guess you know better for next time, don't you? Come on, now, I want you to get upstairs and into a warm bath, I'll make you some soup." Pausing, she tousled his long black hair. "I swear, you're growing like a weed."

Grinning, Bill wrapped her in a hug, resting his chin on her shoulder. "Thanks, mom. I love you."

"Love you, too, kiddo. Now go get that bath. I don't want you getting sick."

***

Tom couldn't remember anything before that day. It was almost as though he had suddenly blinked into being in the room behind the windows, fully formed, fully grown, but with no memories to call his own. He never found it strange, though. Believe me, you are not alone. I don't even read any other forum fics anymore because they are all generally the same. That's why I love IBNI

Now go read the sequel!

awww... i love soooo much!!! ahhh!!! it made me cry awww... its realli different from the other common "i never thought i would get with bill but i am" ones!!!!! i love this sooooooooo much.... XDXDXD... awww... i h8 the thought of them not being together... being trapped in a mirror is sooo scary... omg... )': i dnt like crying but i had to cry for this 1.... best fanfic!!! no offence to the other 1s.. XD...

I utterly just said this in another reply to someone else, but I really like NOT writing the 'I never thought I would be with Bill, but here we are' stories. Sometimes you need to branch out into the sort of weird and see what happens. :D

And, aw, best fanfic? Thank you! (and blackmoon is right, you should go read the sequel if you haven't ;) )

Ok I can't believe I took so long to read this story. I kept seeing people talk about it and I kept saying to myself, "Oh, I should go read that," but I never did... Until now.

That was AMAZING! This is by far the best fanfic I have ever read. You have so much talent! Wow... *speechless*

*goes to find the sequel*

This, right here, is my favourite fanfic so far. And you, IBNI, are holy-smoking fantastic.

I actually re-read this 4 times. I love the atmospheric take on the story and yet you still managed to retain some semblance of reality. It's almost eerie thinking that this story could actually have happened to someone before. An exchange of souls. Beautiful and tragic at the same time.

Amazing!
