As a native English speaker, I beg to differ.
'Ä', I have always described as sounding like a cross between 'é' and 'eh' (it is not quite a long 'a' sound).
The 'Ö' is closer to 'ur' or the 'oo' in 'good'.
The 'Ü' has no English equivalent, though for those who speak a bit of French, it's similar to 'eu'. I can't even find an English word that has a sound CLOSE to it.
The 'ß' is simply like the 's' in, well, "sound".
You can find soundclips online, though, that demonstrate these on various language sites, or even the Leo translation dictionary.
