Chapter One: The Meeting

It all started on that night…that black, stormy night.

“They’re coming for us, Mae! Run!”

That night had been the last night I had seen my family. The last night I had seen anyone, actually. The leeches had been to fast for the human resistance. As far as I know, I’m the last one alive.

“Mae, you’ve got to go, you have to get out of here. They’ll catch you!”
“But what if I never see you again, Kyle?” Kyle had laughed ruefully before speaking again. “Never say never.” He had started the timer then, and disappeared. I had jumped out the window, wondering if the bomb would throw them off. I hadn’t had time to find out.

I peered out of a small window of the remains of a building, and ducked back down immediately as voices manifested not far off. Some were laughing, and I heard a sharp sound of a hand slapping the skin of someone else’s face. I shuddered. Didn’t they, whoever they were, know the dangers of being out in the open? I peered out at them again as they came closer, and grabbed the arm of the nearest one, pulling him down beside me.
“Hey, what do you think you’re doing? Let go of--!”
“Shh! Be quiet, do you want them to hear you?”
“Of course not. We’re perfectly safe out here, don’t worry.” Before I got a good look at his face, a cry emitted from one of his companions as he was dragged away. Another shrill cry of victory followed that immediately. I sprang up, aiming my gun for the creature’s chest. It’s victory screech turned into a cry of terror as it was eaten alive by its own venom. It collapsed to the ground, writhing and twitching in agony. I helped the man to his feet, smiling satisfactorily.
“Not dangerous, eh?” I asked the man beside me. His face was a mask of terror and relief as he got up to examine his friend’s leg wound. “Bill,” he whispered, hugging the man. “Bill, I thought we’d lost you!” Bill looked at the man, then at me. “Well, you would have if it weren’t for this young lady.” He stood, extending a hand. “My name’s Bill Kaulitz. That’s my brother Tom”—here Tom waved—“that’s Georg, and that’s Gustav. We knew of the dangers, but apparently Tom didn’t think much of them.” Bill turned a disapproving eye on his brother, who shrugged helplessly. The man who I’d first met was young; probably eighteen or nineteen. He had on a black tee-shirt, black jeans, and black sneakers. On his head was a red cap, and he had dread-locks. He also had the softest brown eyes I’d ever seen. Bill had the same black hair, the same muscular yet lean build…and the same eyes. Bill’s hair, unlike Tom’s, was sticking up in various places, untamed and unkempt. Georg, who was sitting on the ground next to me, said, “Please, miss, forgive us. We probably should have been paying more attention.” I nodded, smiling. Georg went back to tending his wound.
“That’s okay. What you need are weapons, and I know just where to find them. We’ve got to travel fast, though. More leeches could be on their way.”
“You—you mean…Vampires…right?” Tom asked me in a shaky voice. I turned my hard gray eyes on him, nodding grimly. “I’m afraid that’s exactly what I mean.”

Together, the three of us ran into the night. Gustav volunteered to stay and watch Georg. I had left him with my third pistol, in case anything went wrong. That left Bill and Tom with me, who I recently discovered were twins. I just hope Bill’s not as brainless as Tom, I thought as the store got nearer and nearer. We had taken my brother’s old jeep, the one he had left behind for me before running off. I never forgot that he had failed to mention the directions to the refuge he was running to. I never forgot that he had failed to take me with him. Me, his little sister.

This is my new fanfic, and I hope you enjoy it!

Chapter Two: Invasion

The raid had gone far easier than I had expected. Bill and Tom were naturals. As I climbed into the jeep, I asked them, “How long have you been on the run?” Bill and Tom exchanged looks, and Bill replied, “We’ve been doing this since we were ten. Since then, we’ve met Georg and Gustav. The four of us decided to travel together.” I didn’t speak for a long time. “I…I thought I was the last one. The only one. Why didn’t Kyle take me with him?” Tears stung my eyes, but I blinked them back furiously.
“Kyle?” Tom asked, looking at me now. He seemed concerned. I sighed, and said, “Kyle is my older brother. We used to travel together, but he left two years ago, when I was fifteen. I haven’t heard from him since, and I have no clue whether he’s alive or dead. I don’t even know whether there’s a refuge camp somewhere.” No one said anything for a long time. I wondered what they were thinking. Before I had a chance to ask, I heard a demonic laugh from my right. I cocked my gun in that direction. The laugh only got closer to us. I kept it pointed in that direction, shooting when I thought I had it. Suddenly, it was on the car windshield. Tom screamed as I leaned over the glass barrier, shooting it in the face. It howled with defeat as it fell off.
“Nice aim, Mae,” Bill said patting me on the shoulder. I winced at the pain in my arm from the blast of the shot. “Thanks.”

When we reached my demolished building, Georg was nowhere to be seen. Gustav stood as we approached, and helped us unload our spoils. He looked extremely grim. “A man came up to Georg a while ago and hauled him off. His eyes were red. Georg hasn’t returned since then.” I glanced at the spot where Georg had been sitting. “He’s not coming back. The man who took him was a Leech. I’m surprised he didn’t take you, though.”
“I had a gun, Gustav said, smiling. “I think he’s afraid of them.” I nodded, looking in the direction of the footprints. “I’m going to follow these prints. They’ll probably lead to their city.” The three gaped at me. “Are you crazy???” Tom asked, outraged. “They’ll kill you! Or you may become one of them! You can’t go on a rescue mission!”
“I’ll be fine, Tom, I promise. I’ve been on rescue missions before.” This was only partly true. Yes, I’d rescued friends from their clutches before, but never before had I been in their dominion. “I’ll go with you, then,” he volunteered bravely. I raised an eyebrow at him. “I wouldn’t mind that, but…you don’t have a weapon.” To my surprise, he pulled out a machine gun, filled with the right bullets. “Wrong. So, when are we leaving?”

We left shortly after dawn. Getting to the city wasn’t hard; it was navigating it that was the hard part. Tom and I were disguised as two army leeches; we had found some red contacts and put them in for the mission, and two black army uniforms. Our weapons were slung over our shoulder. When we entered, two security guards checked our eyes, and waved us through. We were stopped about ten feet into the place by another guard. “State your mission, soldiers,” he said sharply. “I tried my best to make my voice sound casual and dead when I answered: “We’re here to see a certain prisoner, sir!” I described Georg, and the sergeant nodded, agreeing to lead us to him.
Georg’s prison cell was a concrete block ten feet tall and ten feet wide. When Tom and I entered, Georg looked up miserably from where he sat huddled in the corner. Whether or not he was faking his doom, I wasn’t sure. On our way here, I had heard part of a conversation between two leech doctors about what they would do with Georg. They had only two choices: kill him, or turn him into one of them. I shivered. “Georg,” Tom hissed as soon as the guard was gone. “Georg, it’s me.” Tom removed his cap, and his dread-locks fell around his shoulders. He quickly put the cap on, smiling. “Mae’s here, too,” he said, pointing to me. I waved. “We’re busting you out of here, Georg,” I whispered, undoing his bindings.
Silently, he stood, just as the sergeant walked in. His shocked expression gave me enough time to pull my gun out. “What are you doing? Guards! Qui--!” That was as far as he got before I shot him, Tom took Georg’s hand, and the three of us darted out of the room and down the hallway. We didn’t have much time; guards and soldiers of all kinds were swarming behind us. I fired a shower of bullets at them, hitting several. I had succeeded in buying us time, but not very much. They were growing in numbers by the second. We soon reached the gates, and vaulted over them, bullet after bullet taking out more and more Vampires. In fifteen minutes, we were all on the run, seeking another, safer shelter. I was glad for the jeep as we sped away under the cover of the night.

New Chapter! It's short, but please, bear with me...

Chapter Three: The Hideout

I awoke to harsh sunlight hitting me from above. Seeing that I was the last to wake, I groaned, stretched, and sat up. The jeep was parked as far away from civilization as possible, in a forest. How had we gotten to the forest so fast? Cautiously, I stood, and climbed out of the jeep. Suddenly, a net dropped on me from above. My eyes widened, and I glanced furiously around as a man swung down from a tree and walked toward me.
His eyes were cold as steel as he looked me over. I gasped as he squatted down beside me. “Kyle? What…what am I doing in a net? Where is everyone?” He said nothing, glancing behind me, searching the dense land. But not for long. He suddenly had me by the collar of my shirt, and he was lifting me into the air. “Kyle, put me down! It’s me, Mae, your sister!” Kyle snorted. “And how am I to know that for sure?” He removed a cylindrical tube from his belt, and shined a light into my eyes twice, looking for a trace of red. Of course, there was nothing to be seen; I had taken the contacts out earlier. “It’ll take more than one leech to take me,” I grunted before he set me down. When he did, he engulfed me in a hug. It was a strange one; it felt oddly stiff and forced. I released him, concerned. “Kyle, what’s wrong? Are you okay?” He looked guilty about something.
“I’m sorry, Mae, but I’ve got to do this.” Everything else was lost to sudden blackness as he pressed a cloth to my face. Chloroform, I thought before I was pulled reluctantly under.

When I next awoke, I found that the light had changed. It was dimmer than the last. There mustn’t be any windows. Are we underground? When I got up to investigate this, my senses told me that we weren’t underground, but in a hollow of some sort.
“Mae? Oh, Mae, I’m so glad you’re here! They caught us, Mae; they think we’re leeches.” I turned at the sound of Bill’s voice, and made my way over to him. “What’s going on here?” I hissed softly. “Why are we prisoners?” Bill looked at me uncomfortably, and explained, “Well…the resistance caught us, thinking we were leeches. I don’t know why you were brought separately, though.” I looked at the rock-solid door of our prison, straining to hear something. When I didn’t, I said, “Kyle brought me here. I think he thinks we’re still free. That’s what I told him, and I think he believes me.” I shuddered, knowing what I’d have done if I’d been a leech. This resistance would have been destroyed….I shook the thought from my mind just as the door opened.
It was Kyle. He was coming in with food. “Here you guys are. We’re not killing our own kind off so quickly.” My heart leapt at that statement, and I stood, demanding, “Why won’t you let us out, then?” Kyle hung his head guiltily. “No one will believe me about your freedom. They all think you’re one of them.”
“I guess we’ll have to show them the truth, then.” This was Bill, standing at my side. Tom joined us, standing on my other side. “It can’t be that hard. All we have to do is show them our eyes,” he chuckled. Gustav, supporting Georg, also stood; the two came up behind me. Kyle saw that he was quickly outnumbered, so he shrugged, standing aside to let us through. When I reached what seemed to be the main room, the din of voices died away, and everyone’s eyes turned on us. My eyes widened at the number of people still left. There must have been at least four-hundred. I saw fear and hatred reflected in every pair of eyes. Kyle took his flashlight and began shining it in our eyes. “These humans are not leeches,” he said, turning to the crowd. “Look at their eyes. There isn’t a hint of red in them. Their skin is tanned, not pale. They’re free, like we all are. They even brought food with them. They come in peace.” Though Kyle’s point had been given, the people still showed signs of hostility. I sighed, slightly discouraged. Why didn’t they believe us? We were telling the truth.
A man seated near the back stood, making his way toward our small group of six. When he got there and saw the proof, he smiled, and began backing us up. Gradually, and to my astonishment, everyone believed him. It was amazing. Kyle turned to me, smiling. “Welcome to our hideout, Mae,” he said, hugging me again.

Chapter Four: Complications

The next few days were extremely quiet for all of us. We spent those days getting used to the hideout that extended below the earth, and the beauty of the crystal caverns took my breath away. We got to know the rebels that lived here, and, pretty soon, I had known no better home. This place was like heaven compared to all the other places I’d been forced to stay. Kyle showed us our new rooms, which were all in the same hallway.
The trouble started when Kyle introduced me to Will. Will had shoulder-length brown hair, and the kindest brown eyes I had ever seen. His personality was so much like Tom’s that I often confused one with the other. I was in love with Tom, and I had managed to keep it a secret for a few weeks until now. If you didn’t know them you would have said that Will and Tom were brothers. It was creepy how much alike they were. And, what was worse was that they became friends almost instantly. I felt very torn between the two. That night, when we were heading to bed, Tom pulled me aside. “Hey, Mae, is something wrong? You seem…worried. You seem afraid that you’re hiding a terrible secret, and that you’d lose my friendship if you said it aloud. Are you okay?” Silently, I nodded, afraid to speak. Could he suddenly read my mind? I wasn’t sure. Tom hugged me, telling me something that I’d never thought to come from him. “I love you, Mae. I love you so much I think my heart may burst. It’s been hard to keep it to myself, I—”
“I love you too, Tom,” I whispered against his chest. I was surprised to find the words to be true. It made me a little unsettled. Tom smiled, kissing me softly. “I’ll see you in the morning, babe,” he whispered before leaving me standing in the hallway, confused and frightened. After a few minutes, I went to bed, completely torn now. Tom was in love with me, and I loved him, too, but…what about Will? I felt as if my heart would burst every time I saw both of them. I wasn’t sure what to think.

The next day, when I was working in the garden powered by the solar-powered plates in the ceiling, Will walked up to me. I noticed that Tom wasn’t around. He crouched down next to me, smiling. “Hey, Mae. Listen, I’m sorry about that first day. It’s just that…we haven’t had anyone new here in such a long time. It took me a moment to realize that your brother was speaking the truth.”
“That’s okay, Will,” I said, standing to get a drink of water. Before I could move, he too stood, hugging me. “Mae…I think…I think I’m in love with you. Every time I see you, my heart and soul are filled with joy, which is something I haven’t felt for a long time. Joy and hope. Every time I see you, I think, I’ve got to have her. She’s the one for me, the one I’ve been searching for. I know that this isn’t a lie, because the feeling’s been with me ever since you got here. I can’t hide it any more.”
I could only stare at him, lost for words. No! I screamed inside my mind. But…I love Tom, not Will! Wait, but I do love Will—I love him with all my heart, too. Oh, I’m so confused!
“Are you all right, Mae?” Will asked, hugging me. “Y-Yes. I’m fine Will, I promise,” I assured him, looking him in the eye. When I did, I gasped. His normally brown eyes were tinted with a blood-thirsty red.

Chapter Five: Shameful Truths

Will covered my mouth before I could scream. I bit his hand. “Get off of me, leech! I was wrong to ever love you!”
“What?” His voice was mixed between confusion, humor, and shock. “I used to love you. But now I see that I’ve been in love with a…a Vampire.” Will said noting for a long time. The hand disappeared from my mouth. Slowly, I turned toward him. His back was to me. “I was hoping you wouldn’t notice,” he said softly, staying where he was. “You…you were in love with me?” he asked, turning around now. I nodded reluctantly. I didn’t want to meet his eyes. I was too afraid of what I’d find there.
“Why didn’t you tell anyone? Am…am I the only one who knows?” Will shook his head. “My brother knows. When we came, he was so afraid that someone would discover me…but, shockingly, no one did. I’ve been safe here from my father for years.”
“Your father? Isn’t he here, too?” Will shook his head. “No. It’s just Adam and me.” After a brief silence, he asked, “You want to know who my father is, don’t you?” I nodded, my eyes widening on impulse. Will sighed. “My father is a Vampire, and my mother is human. She was allowed to stay with the Colony, since my father is the King. A few days after I was born, there was a mutiny. My father died protecting my mother, and then she fled with me. She never made it out. After hiding me, she was found and killed also. Here I am on the run from the new King, who wants me dead because I’m a Half-Blood, and they’re considered wicked. He was also the man that my father hated. The two were arch-enemies. Here I am, revealing my deepest, darkest secret to a human girl, hidden away with his brother in the rebel camp. It’s the safest place for me to be, apparently.” He laughed cruelly. “Well, so Adam thought. He never would know that I’d meet my doom here.” Will hung his head. I couldn’t help it; I put my arm around his shoulders. “I’m so sorry, Will. I—I didn’t know.”
“Well, you do now,” he said harshly. “I didn’t know that I’d fall in love with a human when I came here. I didn’t know that my life would fall apart like this.”
“Its okay, Will, its okay. You’re safe here. I’ll see to it that your secret is kept safe. I won’t tell anyone, I swear.” He raised his tear-streaked face up at me, and smiled. Now I knew why he disappeared mysteriously every few weeks. His eyes were a deeper, darker red, and he fled for the door so suddenly that I had to sprint to keep up. “I need…I need to feed,” he yelled at me, not caring who heard. I slowed to a walk, letting him run for his room. It made sense to me. Slowly, I walked back to my room. Tom was waiting for me and as I walked in, he hurried over to me and put an arm around my shoulder.
“Are you okay, Mae? Did that creep Will do anything to you?” I shrank into his chest, stifling a sob. “No, he didn’t do anything,” I lied. I couldn’t tell him now, now that my friend needed help. I didn’t like to think that a Half-Blood was in love with me, but it was the truth, and I could never shrink away from the truth, especially a truth as scary as that.
“Sit down for a minute, please,” Tom said, leading me toward my bed. I sat obediently, accepting the glass of water he offered me. “Now, tell e what’s wrong, Mae. I love you, and I want to help.” My eyes widened, and I said nothing except, “I can’t.” Tom looked bewildered. “Can’t? What do you mean, can’t?” I looked into his eyes helplessly. “I mean I promised someone that I wouldn’t. I swore to keep it a secret.”
“But you can tell me, babe. You can always tell me.” I suddenly turned to him, angry. “No, Tom, I can’t! I swore I wouldn’t, remember?” He said nothing. After a while, he stood, and left the room, leaving me to ponder over my new burden.

Hope you like it, everyone!

Chapter Six: Confrontation

Will

I found it very hard for me to sleep that night. Well, I guess you could call it sleeping, but when has a Vampire, even a Half-Blood like me ever been able to sleep? It was the only thing that had been derived from me since birth. Everything else went on normally; eating, drinking, and various other activities. Aging was one of the most agonizing processes that I’d ever been through. While everyone else aged by one year, I only aged by half of one. The situation I was in forced that, and how I hated it so. The one thing that truly confused me was Mae. She was the most interesting human I’d met in all my years. Despite my ability to “read” the future intentions of any normal human, Mae seemed oddly immune to it. Her scent contributed to her odd stature; it was nothing I’d come across in my eighty years of a cursed life. The only way I can describe it is to say that it’s a trip to Heaven itself.
Frustrated with my thoughts and my inability to sleep, I stood, walking out of the room. I didn’t wake Adam; he had lived with my nightly walks all his life, and he was used to it. I walked out into the hallway, wondering what other secrets Mae kept so well hidden from me. I was sure that I wouldn’t run into anyone; if I did, I’d keep my distance. Oh, how wrong I was. I suddenly found myself face-to-face with a young man with raven-black, spiky hair. “Oh, sorry, kid,” he said hastily, stepping out of my way. I turned, and called after him. “Wait,” I said, going after him. He froze in place. “Yes? What do you need?” I walked to him until I was beside him. “Your…your brother is Mae’s boyfriend…right?” Bill cringed at the question, nodding. I nodded in understanding. “Does…Does he…mistreat her…in any way?” The man looked horrified. “Tom would never hurt Mae! He has no reason to. Why?” he asked, getting suspicious. “Oh, no reason,” I said innocently. The man said nothing for a long time. Finally, he stuck out his hand. “Bill,” he introduced himself—unnecessarily, since I had already known he would say that. “Will,” I replied, shaking the offered hand. When he let go, he asked, “Do you get cold easily, Will?” I shook my head. Bill pondered it for a few moments, and then shrugged as if it was no bog deal. Better for him; he wouldn’t dream of knowing my secret. “Just stay away from Tom, punk, you hear? Or you’ll be wishing you’d never been born.” He walked away briskly before I could reply. I smiled despite my feeling of sorrow. I could kill him quite easily if the two of us got into a fight. But I didn’t want to; for Mae’s sake and mine. I couldn’t dream of hurting such an innocent soul as her. She would be devastated. Wondering if I should have ever trusted her with my secret, and what would happen if she failed to keep it, I continued my nightly walk.

Chapter Seven: Caught

Mae

The next few weeks passed by normally. I saw plenty of both Tom and Will, but never together. I made sure that Tom and Will were never in the same room together, and I was especially careful about the secret Will had confided in me. I soon found myself unaware of time as it passed; I focused only on the pleasure being with my friends and loved ones gave me. For once, life seemed normal again. I could live it without being on the run so often. Unfortunately, like all the good times, this did not last for long. They came for him on the twenty-second of June, only three months after he had confided in me with his deepest, darkest secret. I was alarmed that he hadn’t even told Adam about me. Then again, Adam didn’t know me well enough to trust me. When they came for him, I hardly expected the turn of events that would follow their arrival.
It happened shortly after midnight. I was woken by Tom, who whispered, “They’re here! Grab your weapons, and try to save Will! I’ll be right behind you!” Save Will? What in the world was Tom—oh. As the realization hit me, sweat trickled down my neck. So, they had discovered him. This wasn’t good. I grabbed the gun from Tom, shoved my shoes on, and rushed into the den. They were gathered in a cluster around Will, who sat with his head bent at the center of the leech-ring. Another man sat with him. Both had their hands tied behind their back. As I got nearer to the circle, both boys raised their heads to look at me. My eyes widened when I saw my brother sitting with Will. Gripping the gun tightly, I rushed to the center, despite Tom’s protests. Kyle and Will looked dreadful. Both had dark circles under their eyes, and bruises all around. “Kyle, what are you doing here?” I asked, my voice a whisper.
“Getting my punishment. Protecting you,” he replied in a defiant voice. I gasped. “Kyle, you can’t go in my place! I’m the one—the only one—who should know his secret!” I hadn’t realized that I had been shouting. Many curious, angry pairs of eyes rested on me. I gulped. Kyle shook his head. “You weren’t the only one there, Mae.” I turned to him, horrified. “W-What do you mean? Are you trying to tell me that you were eavesdropping?” He nodded. “I kept it a secret, too.”
“Kept what a secret?” Tom asked. I gulped, knowing that there was no way out of this. The Vampires were staring at me curiously now. I stood, meeting every pair of eyes in the crowd. I saved Tom’s for last. “Will told me his secret because he felt he could confide in me. And he could; I’ve kept his secret for many months now, pretending not to know where he had gone whenever he disappeared for hours at a time every few weeks. The truth is”—here I braced myself—“the truth is that Will is one of them.” Murmurings manifested from the crowd. “But don’t think of him as a traitor,” I continued, louder this time. Adam’s hazel eyes blazed accusingly at me. “If anyone, think me as one. He confided his deepest darkest secret to me…out of love.” There was an audible gasp from the crowd. Adam’s accusing glare turned to his half-brother. Tom looked at me with such love and pain that tears came to my eyes. “So, saying that, I want to apologize. I’m sorry, everyone, for betraying you. Most of all, though, Tom…you have no idea how much this pains me to be the one to tell you this. The truth is that Will is in love with me, and….” I trailed off, unsure of what to say. Feeling that I had said my piece, I sat down with the others. “You may as well take me, too,” I told one of them humbly. He said nothing, only looked at Will and me with an amused expression.
The next thing I knew, Tom was sitting at my side, head bowed. Now the Vampire looked at all of us, seeming merely amused. I gulped. “If she goes, I go, too,” Tom told him defiantly. The man only nodded, his eyes turning cold. I glared angrily at Tom while we were bound. “Why did you do that, Tom?” I hissed at him. “Don’t you know you’re going to get yourself killed?” Tom winked, replying, “I’m not leaving you, Mae. Like I said earlier, I love you. And if you love Will enough to help him, then I’m going with you. I know that Will is in love with you; I figured that out after you told us about the time Will told you his secret. So that’s why you were in a bad mood when I tried getting it out of you. I’m sorry, babe. I won’t do that again.”
You think??? That was my business and mine alone. I glanced over at Will. His Sight must have been clouded if he hadn’t known that the army was coming. “Thank you,” I said as we were forced to climb into a helicopter. Tom smiled valiantly at me, and I wondered what tricks he may have up his sleeve. I looked at Will, promising myself that we’d get him out of this no matter what it took.

I'll try to have ch 8 up soon. I'm glad you like this so much; I didn't think anyone would go for it. I love this whole good vs. good thing instead of good vs. evil. Sometimes it gets a little boring.

I can't wait for Breaking Dawn; I'm going to the Midnight release of it, or trying to, anyway. As you can see, this story is like Twilight, but it's more like I Am Legend than anything else. It's also a little like the Host. Thanks for the fedback, guys!

Chapter Eight: Ultimatum

The low hum of the helicopter soon died away, and the grunts of Vampires could be heard as they were unloading various objects. It was Will who woke me. “Mae, we’re here. Please, wake up before they assume you’re dead.” I grunted, opening my eyes. Will’s pale face came into view, and worry was etched into it. His red-brown eyes reflected the fear that set over my face as I remembered where we were, and what had happened. The fact that my wrists were tied didn’t help the situation at all. I looked at Tom and Kyle, who were watching us warily. As I watched them, I noticed that they conversed quietly together, careful not to make it so we could hear. I fixed them with a reproachful stare, and then snapped myself out of it. It wasn’t their fault that we were here. When they mirrored my reproach, I turned to them with pleading eyes. Their expressions didn’t soften.
The door opened, and I found myself on my feet, being pushed off the chopper by rough hands. I wondered why I was the first one off the helicopter when I saw that no one was in front of me except a few officers. When I looked behind me, I was ordered to look straight ahead. I had no idea where we were going or what would happen to us.
Soon all four of us were shut into a cell, and Will came last, after hearing a stern word from a man who seemed like his guardian. There was a time that their voices were raised, and then the man slapped Will across one cheek. He came into the cell reluctantly, and went to sit in one corner. Seeing that Tom was giving me the cold shoulder, I went to sit beside him. Will was not feeling his best. He kept glancing at the door to the cell as if something were to come at any minute. “They know that Theissen wants me dead. They’ve paired us together so that they can kill us all.” I looked at the other two, trying to see if they got Will’s message. They showed no sign of it. I turned back to Will, a look of fierce determination in my eyes. “They don’t have us yet, Will. I’ll have us out of here in no time, I promise.” He said nothing, so I crawled away from him, suddenly weary. I curled up in my own, dark little corner, waiting for sleep to carry me off.

I awoke to the smell of sizzling bacon. I sat up, wondering why they were generous enough to give us that. When I crawled to the center of the cell, I saw everyone eyeing Will curiously as he ate. I grabbed a piece of bacon, waiting for him to explain. He didn’t, so I didn’t say anything, either. The next few days were like this, with nothing interesting except Will’s odd story of his abilities and habits. Nothing happened until the sixth day, when a man entered our cell. He was young, perhaps Tom’s age, with brownish-blond hair, and hazel eyes. His hair hung straight to his shoulder, and, when you looked close enough, you would say he looked like a former friend of Tom’s. I shrank into my corner as he picked me out of the group, and came toward me. His eyes weren’t brown anymore, but a blood-thirsty red. His skin was white as chalk.
“Georg,” I whispered as he came closer. He stopped a foot away from me, and said, “Your fate has been chosen, human. Come with me.” Georg grabbed me, none too gently, and hauled me out of the cell. Behind him, I could hear Tom yelling his name desperately, and Will yelling mine. He didn’t speak again until we had reached the King’s quarters. He deposited me there, and asked in a cold voice, “Do you want me to get the traitor, Sire?” The King’s voice was even colder and crueler than Georg’s. “Yes, Sergeant, bring him as well.” Georg left.
The King had the blackest hair that I’d ever seen. It was darker than Bill’s. I gulped as he looked at me with his equally dark eyes. “So. You feel it okay to fall recklessly in love with a traitor.” He smiled, revealing the most beautiful, most cruel smile that I’d seen in my life. “Then I guess that makes you a traitor also.” I said nothing. I knew enough about leeches to know that they disapproved of their prisoners speaking freely. I kept my lips locked shut. The door opened again, and Will was shoved to his knees beside me. The King said nothing until Georg left. I looked helplessly after him, knowing that we had lost him forever. I didn’t dare look at Will as the King stood and spoke. “As the vermin knows, I am not the rightful King.” He glared at the two of us before continuing. “He will never gain this throne, because you are both to be condemned to death. When our defiant expressions didn’t change, he scowled. I cheered inwardly at his weakness, and wondered if he knew of Will’s gift.
“Why her, Will?” the king asked now, eyeing Will with curiosity. For a moment, Will said nothing, then, “Because she’s different than most humans, Theissen.” He shook his head. “You’d have to know her better to really understand.” Theissen nodded, shifting his gaze to me. “And why have you told no one of this relationship, human?” The interrogation continued for perhaps fifteen more minutes. Then we were escorted back to our cell by Georg, who never answered Tom’s despairing calls.
“He’s gone, Tom,” I said miserably when he came over to me. Tom’s face fell, and he put an arm around me. Will and Kyle were watching us intently. I could feel Will’s relentless, curious gaze on my back, but I ignored it. Tom gathered me in his arms. “I love you, Mae, you know I do. I’ll do whatever it takes to get all four of us out of here alive.” I smiled at him, and he kissed me softly. When I went to bed that night, my heart was torn between the two once more, leaving me with a feeling of despair.
