Advanced waring, this one isn't going to be very long.
----
"Come on, Tom, it'll be fun," Bill said, tugging at one of the dreads hanging limp over his brother's shoulder.
"No it won't. You always say it will be fun, and then it never is. One of us always ends up coming out of it uncomfortable and grouchy," Tom replied, swatting at Bill's hand to make him leave his hair alone.
"This time will be different, I promise. We can stop as soon as you want to. Just give it a try," Bill cajoled, draping himself lazily over Tom's shoulder.
Tom sighed, tilting his head to meet Bill's. "Promise for real?"
"Promise for real."
"Fine, but we better do this quick before I change my mind," Tom conceded, tugging at Bill's crunchy bangs just as his brother popped back up to his feet with a clap.
"Spectacular! Meet me in five?" Bill asked, practically vibrating with excitement.
"Whatever," Tom replied, standing and putting his guitar back in it's stand while Bill disappeared into his room. Rolling his eyes heavily he ducked down the hall after Bill. A few minutes later he reemerged, several layers of long sleeved shirts under his trademark oversized t-shirt, and his dreads carefully bound up under a beat up knit cap that had been pulled down almost to his eyes.
Bill was already standing prepared by the door, decked head to toe in black with nothing showing of him but a pair of dark eyes peeking out from under his coat hood. "I'm ready!" he chirped from behind the scarf double wrapped around his neck and face. "Get your coat on already, and don't forget your mittens, we need those hands."
"I know, I know," Tom said with a small grin, pulling his gloves on and tucking the cuffs between layers of shirt before putting on his thick winter's coat. "Zip me?" he asked, wiggling his yarn enrobed hands at Bill helplessly.
Grinning with his eyes, Bill obliged, zipping the front of Tom's coat and snapping the snaps shut easily with his leather gloves. Snagging the red scarf off the coat rack, Bill proceeded to cocoon Tom's face to match his own, tying the lose ends in a convoluted knot before stepping back to admire his handiwork. "All set?"
"As much as I'm going to be," Tom replied, clawing his scarf down under his chin where he thought it belonged.
"You're going to regret that later," Bill replied, pulling his own black scarf higher up his nose and opening the door, a soft swirl of snow sneaking its way inside and melting quickly on the tile. Groping briefly behind himself, Bill caught hold of Tom's hand, and drug him out into the winter wonderland beyond the front door. "Come on, the backyard is better," he said, pulling Tom along in his path.

Reaching the back, the twins paused, hands still joined tightly between them, and let their eyes drift across the smooth, perfectly unmarred landscape of white that sparkled lightly in the afternoon light. "It is kinda pretty," Tom said, breaking the reverent silence as he tugged his scarf back up over his nose to keep the chill air out of his lungs.
Next to him Bill nodded slowly, giving Tom's hand a squeeze before dashing off across the yard, his footprints breaking up the flat surface of the snow as he ran. "You're going to get cold if you just stand there, Tomi!" he called from the far side of the property, sliding to an ungraceful tumbling stop in a snowbank.
"Now who's cold?" Tom called back, collecting up a snowball and flinging it at Bill, grinning as it exploded against his brother's shoulder.
A moment later a snowy return shot fired back at him, shattering harmlessly against the ground at his feet. "No fair! You can't hit a man while he's down!" Bill shouted back, throwing another snowball, this one managing to hit Tom in the knee.
"Does that mean I can still hit you?" Tom retorted, earning a ball to the shoulder. "Jeez, kidding! At this rate there's not going to be any snow left on the ground to make that snowman, you know."
Across the lawn Bill paused, looking at the snowball in his hand thoughtfully for a moment before placing it carefully on the ground and beginning to roll it Tom's way. Pushing through the ankle deep snow, the ball grew quickly, and all too soon Bill's boots were in a losing battle against the mass of the thing, skittering uselessly against the frozen ground. "Tom, come help me," he called, as his feet slipped out from under him for the fifth time.
Grinning to himself, Tom strode across to meet his brother, and helped him shove the ball another dozen feet or so until even the both of them together couldn't get it to roll any further. "I think this one is done," he said, giving it an ineffectual shove with his foot.
Bill's eyes pouted. "I wanted to make a big snowman this year, though," he said sadly. "Oh well. Time for the middle!" Darting off again, Bill gathered up yet another ball of snow, quickly rolling it across to meet the first. "Help me get it up on the first one, Tomi."
"Um..." Tom started, looking at the new ball. "I don't know if...."
"If we both lift it, we can get it up there," Bill replied optimistically, squatting down next to the ball. Sighing, Tom assumed the same position on the other side. "Alright. One, two, three!" In unison both the spindly boys made their best attempt to heft the large block of snow off the ground, raising it a full inch before dropping it again. "******. This is why we never get to build a big snowman," Bill groused.
Patting his dejected sibling's hands across the ball, Tom thought the situation over for a minute. "I have an idea," he said simply. Rolling the center ball to one side, Tom began building up the back of the bottom snowball, packing more and more snow onto it as Bill watched in curiosity. Gradually his plan came into view as the ramp extended back and away from the snowman to be. "There, now we can just roll it up, easy."
Blinking softly, Bill smiled again. "I should have thought of that!" he declared, sliding quickly around the middle snowball and pushing it up the makeshift snow ramp, Tom helping to keep it straight so it didn't fall off an edge. "We should have made it bigger since we had the ramp," he mused, breaking chunks of the incline off and using them to pack the two-thirds snowman together securely. "Tomi, go make the head while I do this."
"Bossy," Tom replied, wandering off to find some fresh snow for the top. Bill was still fussing over the smoothness of his packing when Tom returned with the headpiece clutched to his stomach. "Someone ask for a head?" he asked, raising the ball a little.
"You shouldn't have carried that over by yourself!" Bill admonished helping Tom get it on the top quickly. "It's heavy, you could have hurt yourself. Pulled something or dropped it on your foot."
"It wasn't that heavy," Tom said, helping Bill packed the head into place. "Especially not compared to the last bit, anyway."
"Maybe, but still," Bill said, giving Tom a concerned look.
Silently they sealed the cracks in their snowman, Bill pausing to dig a smiley face out of the head snow, and stepping back to admire their creation. "I think it looks good," Bill said with a nod.
"We do good work," Tom agreed, catching Bill's hand in his, squeezing it softly.
For a minute they stood silently once again, looking over the landscape, now torn and crisscrossed with bare spots. "I'm cold," Bill said, breaking the moment of quiet.
"Me too."
"Then we should go back in." Turning on his heel, Bill lead them back around to the front of the building and inside, the pair of them quickly shedding snow coated clothing in a pile by the door. "Meet me in five?"
"Whatever," Tom replied, picking his way over the wet floor to his room and shedding his snow dampened clothing in favor of something warm and dry. Redressed, he grabbed a blanket off his bed before heading back to the common room, finding Bill already curled on the couch with a blanket of his own.
Without a word, Bill pulled up the corner of his covers, inviting Tom inside and resting against his brother while Tom arranged the pair of blankets over the both of them. "We should really do this more often," Bill said, drowsily, resting his head lazily on Tom's shoulder.
"Maybe," Tom semi-agreed, resting his head on Bill's. "Maybe."

The end. :)
I warned you this one was short.
