Not bad, girlie! I would suggest exploring more males and different facial expressions. Also, you seem to focus on extreme value in certain areas while neglecting others. I would practice at least gesturing the form of other areas.
Visit the link I will soon put in my signature to see my credibility. :P
Keep up the good work, though!! Portraits are my favorite thing to do, too!! XD

wow thank you for the comment! really, it was like super complete.
and thank you for the suggestions. yes you are right. i do concentrate in certain areas, specially in the eyes. i love making the central focus of the drawing in the eyes because they can reflect and express so much. but probably i neglect others, but if you could, i would love to know the other areas i don't pay that much attention.
the male thing: i swear i tried making some men, but they will came out with boobs and hips and everything like a girl, the eyes, the mouth , the face, everything. so i kinda gave up with that... :x

lol I do that to my men sometimes... They definitely take lots of practice :P
Let's see.... In the first drawing, my eyes went to the rosary first. It is very nicely done, but it took effort to move my eyes to the rest of the drawing. If you added contrast in the rest of the drawing (even if it's not there) it would make the rest of it pop. You can still have the rosary as a focal point, but also have value in the rest of the drawing.
Also in the first drawing, on a more anatomical note, I don't really like the size of the hands in relation to the head. Hands are usually about the size of the face (try it on yourself, spread your fingers out, too). I think his/her hands should be a little smaller, in length and width. Also, the position the figure is in is very unnatural. If you need help drawing a pose like that, try to use a friend or family member as a model. The upper arm is way too long, making the forearm seem weird. Both the upper and lower arm should each be about a head ( the size of the figure's head in the drawing) long.
The second drawing is much better. However, the face of the woman fades into the background. You should add more definition under her eyes, where hair/the hood is falling, under the cheeks, under the lips, under her chin... Basically, add more contrast and definition in the face itself. It'll make it look less like the features are pasted on. Try to identify a source of light and adjust and create shadows according to that. Once again, use a model if necessary. :) Great concept, though :)
The next one has more contrast, but still, not much definition in the face itself. And, the hair fades into the background. Even if she had white or silver hair, there would still be very dark areas (and you'd need to create some if there aren't any). I love the outfit, though :)
The next one is nice :) However, I'm losing the figure in the background. It took some thought to find one of her arms in the trees. Either add more contrast around her arm in the trees or add more contrast on the edges of her arm itself. The figure or the background needs to be darker, preferably the background so the figure comes forward in space. Nice sky and I love the outfit, again lol
In the next one, you have more contrast, but you'll need more of it to make it pop. I'll try to find an example in my artwork... here! http://rinchan089.deviantart.com/art/Tanya-81593467 This is a drawing of my aunt. Do you think all of those shadows existed as dark as they are? Her hair is blond and her skin is fair. But, in order to make features pop out, I needed contrast. And making things darker doesn't always mean contrast. Sometimes certain places that are lighter have more impact. But, you need more dark places around those light areas to make them stand out.
I have to go to bed now because I have work in the morning, but I hope this has helped you!! :)
I can definitely see improvement in each drawing. Keep up the good work!!

wow even a larger comment!
well thank you again for the tips! even though i have to disagree with some of them.
for example, in the first drawing, the rosary and the eye where supposed to be the focus points, so i wouldn't change the contrast in the rest of the drawing. i agree with the size of the hands and arms though.
the shadow contrast, is something that you and me differ when drawing, you like making darker shadows, i prefer them lighter, anyways, there are some drawings in which i would like the shadows to be a little bit darker that they are.
just one more thing. i learnt to draw by myself, i never went to drawing lessons or anything like that, i learnt by looking, so i have to admit that i may have some problems with the anatomy part. but i think i'm making a progress in that area. also in the shadows. :)

I could tell that you wanted the viewer to focus on the eye and the rosary. However, I only focused on the hand and the rosary. Since you've never taken an art class you may not know this, but the eye needs to be guided around a drawing. Otherwise, it gets stuck and looks weird because the flow is disrupted. In that first drawing, the rosary and the hand itself are sooo much darker than the rest of the drawing and there is nothing else to move the eye around the piece. If you made the eye darker as well, enough to compete with the rosary, then the drawing would have much more of an impact.
And I don't wanna imagine you sighing that you may have to erase the hand to make it darker. I don't know if you own one, but there is this kind of eraser called a kneaded eraser. It is sorta like clay and is capable of molding to erase small areas. However, it doesn't erase completely like a white or pink eraser. It simply lifts off the pencil. It is very useful for making areas lighter without losing the lines.
And, yes, we do have different styles and styles change all the time. All artists have a unique way of looking at the world and putting it on paper. However, there are some basic things I was trying to get across with the contrast. You don't need high contrast like I have in my style. However, you do need contrast or your piece will appear washed out or not flow as well (as I have explained earlier). Also, an issue that you should resolve is using shading to create form. You do this very well on the areas you concentrate on, but you seem to have difficulty with this in lighter areas. This mainly takes practice. It helps if you doodle simple shapes (like a circle) and shade it in as if it were a sphere or other 3-D form. Shade it like you normally would and then draw another shape and try to make it as light as possible while still implying a form. [i will make an example of this for you] When you perfect this, your drawings will look more complete and polished.
For not taking any art classes (though I'm sure you had some basic training in elementary school at least) you're definitely not bad. However, I would suggest getting books on drawing the human figure and the like. There are MANY helpful books out there. If you don't want all the technical mumbo jumbo, I would suggest using a How to Draw Manga/Anime book. I know that's not your style (used to be mine, that's how I know about this), but they show you in very simple terms what the human form should look like. The series is made of mostly images and few words. And, yes, manga/anime style bodies also have to be anatomically correct.
I have always loved art and have taken classes outside of school, mostly as a young child. However, these classes were mostly basic drawing classes and my motor skills developed later than a lot of people. However, in around middle school, my motor skills became much more developed and I began drawing manga (like actual comics and stuff in that style). I sucked and I taught myself with How to Draw Anime/Manga books and tools on the internet, but I seriously wanted to constantly improve myself. I learned how to draw the human form without any lessons in it at all. My first human was a full 2 years before I learned about drawing figures in high school (my first person [both are from photos]: http://rinchan089.deviantart.com/art/Robert-Shwartzman-81595575 second person: http://rinchan089.deviantart.com/art/Takeshi-Kaneshiro-81593372).
So, the moral of that personal story is to keep practicing!! You can defintely improve and eventually master this :) I have faith in you!! XD

i started drawing when i was 11 (i'm 18 now), my first style was the manga style, yes. then, with the years it developed to the one it is now.
and i do have one of those erasers you refer too, i'll start using it again.
and i want to buy an anatomy book for so long, the thing is that is kinda expensive but that's the one i want! so i'll buy it!
ok...oh and to be sincere in elementary school they didn't taught me to draw, i always was the "better" of the class. i developed my way of drawing by liking different drawers, first anime and manga series, then luis royo (my favorite painter).
oh and thank you for your comments!

Awesome :) We're very similar then :) I began drawing manga at about 10 and started making manga at 11. I have some examples on my deviantart somewhere :P
I don't remember being taught how to draw in elementary school either, and I was never that good ( **** motor skills) but the practice in thinking like an artist and making artwork does help your artistic side.
Try half.com or amazon.com to get the anatomy book. There are always used ones that are cheaper than the regular price of the book. It's awesome :P Or ebay...
I've never heard of that artist, but I'll look him up :P I love Renior, John Singer Sargent, and Roy Lichtenstein. As well as various mangakas... :P
You're very welcome for the comments :) Anytime!! I love to help a fellow artist!! I saw somewhere that you are 18 years old! I turned 19 not too long ago. :P
